Prior to becoming an Allies mentor, “Joann” had to work through her own pain and healing as a survivor herself. She was ready to turn her pain into purpose and walk beside other survivors.
When Joann met Violet, her first thought was that Violet was out of place in the foster home she lived in. Joann knew Violet needed somewhere to flourish and did not feel that was happening there. Joann’s hope was that all of us at Purchased could help Violet blossom. And blossom she has!
When asked how Violet differs from other girls her age, Joann shared that Violet is , “so much more mature, so much more driven, so much more determined to be true to herself, her dreams, her own healing and helping others.” Since knowing her, Violet has shown more of her authentic self and really let her inner self shine out. Violet has so much to give. Violet has BIG dreams she just keeps chasing and accomplishing.
When asked how Joann has grown, she said, “In HUGE ways.” Joann’s story is different than some; as she was a young child when she was trafficked. Since becoming a mentor, Joann is learning more about all different types of trafficking/grooming/generational exploitation. She has become exponentially educated. Joann says that since becoming a mentor it has “humbled me to know…I do not know it all after all and have so much to learn.”
Violet’s quiet kindness has also taught Joann a lot. Joann is “loud, extroverted and takes charge”. Violet is so sweet, quiet, and watchful. Joann attempts to remind herself at appropriate times to be more like Violet.
