In our work with the population we serve, we often see mentees take one step forward, only to find themselves stepping back shortly thereafter. Yet, no matter where they fall on their path, we remain a steady constant in their lives. Here’s a glimpse into the journey of one of our mentees.
This young woman was first matched with our oldest mentor to date. The care and connection between them have been truly heartwarming. We’ve witnessed the mentee patiently wait for her mentor, as the mentor walks slowly with her walker—it’s such a tender moment. Despite the age difference, the mentee often says, “She’s lit!” Their bond has been a joy to observe. At the time they were matched, the mentee was preparing for graduation, working, and living in a safe foster home, where she followed the house rules.
However, after completing their Friendship Pact and following a period of significant personal loss and health challenges for her mentor, she was reassigned to a new mentor. Coincidentally, this transition occurred as the mentee turned 18. To her, turning “grown” meant she no longer had to adhere to household rules, and as a result, she moved out.
After her move, the mentee made some choices that we, as supporters, might not have recommended. However, the new mentor and our staff have been consistently present for her, offering concern and guidance without judgment.
As we began the new year, we worked together to create a roadmap for a brighter future. We set seven goals for 2025, and that same afternoon, the mentee achieved three of them. WOOT WOOT!
To celebrate her accomplishments, we surprised her with a bouquet created earlier that day at the staff holiday party. The joy on her face was priceless—she was both surprised and deeply touched by the gesture. That small act of kindness truly filled her cup, and in turn, the staff member’s as well.
Here’s to taking a step forward over and over again!
